In recent years, the direct assessment of practical work has been removed from some UK A-level specifications following guidance from the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation. Some have argued that regarding the assessment of practical skills, this has left a vacuum. This session will report upon a preliminary investigation into how a computer simulation might be used to judge certain experimental skills. This may have repercussions within the U.K. examination system and others, e.g. the Chinese Gaokao. I shall demonstrate the suggested methods and discuss the findings of a pilot study.
