In this session we will demonstrate how you can bring bioinformatics activities into the classroom using free resources from the website
www.yourgenome.org. These resources are suitable for A-level students.
This will be a workshop that walks the participants through the activities and gives them the opportunity to try out each activity. Three activities will be show cased:
Function Finders BLAST: an activity where a DNA sequence is translated into a protein sequence which can be used to search the UNIPROT database.
MRSA gene hunt – use a flash-based app to compare the genes of two strains of
Staphylcoccus aureus bacteria
BRAF and COSMIC – an activity where students have to identify a cancer mutation from DNA sequence data and find out more about it on the COSMIC database
