Blend science and history when teaching the Stone Age through to the Saxons with free resources from the Wellcome Genome Campus. Suitable for KS2.
In this session we will describe how we developed an innovative primary school programme blending together genetics and archaeology, bringing to life changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Anglo-Saxons whilst applying techniques to work scientifically.
We will talk about the Strands of Time programme and showcase free resources and activities that can be used in the classroom to introduce the concept of bioarchaeology, extracting DNA from ancient remains to find out more about people and animals from past times. This is a fun and effective way to blend together elements from the history and science curriculum for Key Stage 2 students.
Resources include:
- “Code crackers” – decode a DNA code to find out what it does in animals.
- “Recreate a face” – use DNA data from an Iron Age and Anglo Saxon skeletons to discover what they looked like!
- “Ancient belongings” - discover what we can learn from the past from objects left behind
- “Fantastic flints” – identify prehistoric flint tools and make your own from a bar of soap.
Teachers will receive a free USB with a resource pack
