In this session we will explore how chapters from a new children’s fictional book DNA Detectives: To Catch a Thief by  Dr Amanda Hartley can be coupled with hands-on activities in the classroom to teach 7-10 years olds about DNA and forensics.
We will provide a short introduction to the DNA detective books series, introducing the characters and plotlines. We will then showcase a series of free DNA and forensic themed resources and highlight where they link to key themes covered in the book.
Blending literacy, storytelling, and science-based activities is a great way for the story to come alive for the students and for the gain a greater understanding behind the scientific concepts. This cross-curricular approach helps to support science teaching in a fun and effective way.
Amanda will also talk about her classroom-based DNA Detectives workshops and how they can be used to bring the subject to life. All schools can access a free interactive workshop which accompanies the book (and hire a box of props to help make the workshop even more interactive!)
