Difficult Ideas in Chemistry REPEATED I05
Difficult ideas in Chemistry

Particles which do not change amidst change, burning which builds up oxides, the funny pH scale, reaction rates - how do we approach these difficult ideas?

  • We explore some of the barriers to understanding our chemical environment, starting with those particles which do not change even though things burn, grow, rot and evaporate around us.
  • Then we examine the process of burning which is a constructive process with energy stored in the fuel/oxygen system (no energy is stored in food or fuels!).
  • The gaseous oxides of combustion are acidic and the solid ashes are alkaline, but what is this strange pH scale?
  • And why do slow reactions get so much faster as the temperature rises – a 10 degree rise in temperature often doubles the rate? (Think of the time it takes milk to go sour – 8 days in the ‘fridge at 4 degrees, 4 days in a cool house at 14 degrees, 2 days in a warm house at 24 and a day at 34 degrees.)
My talk will be exemplified by reactions we see in everyday life, and I will suggest ideas for helping students understand the underlying chemistry.

About Keith Ross
I started teaching science in school on VSO in India after a metallurgy degree at Oxford. After a year in industry I made teaching my career, first in secondary schools in Birmingham and Leicestershire, then for 3 years in Nigeria. I was deeply inspired by Clive Sutton during a Master's in Education at Leicester University and was involved with some of the early challenges made to the science national curriculum by Ros Driver and colleagues.
In1980 I moved to teacher education at what became the University of Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. I began by working with students from Africa on A level chemistry teaching. Later I became the science tutor for the GITEP post graduate secondary teacher education project and the book “Teaching Secondary Science” now in its 4th edition was the outcome. Today’s talk is based on chapter 14 - 'Difficult ideas in Chemistry'.
In 2007-8 I worked with primary teachers in a college of education in Pakistan, and more recently, retired and living in the South West of France, I have been helping to develop chemistry videos for Fuseschool.

This session explores a creative, link-learning approach to teaching science by weaving imaginative and inspiring English activities throughout a unit of work.

We will share a couple of chapters from our 'Science Meets English' publication which utilises a cross-curricular approach to teaching science. It explores creative ways to link science and English in activities that are mutually beneficial to both subjects. The aim being to excite children’s curiosity and allow them to develop their scientific conceptual understanding whilst also improving their literary skills. This link-learning approach allows teachers and children to spend more time on activities, gives a real sense of purpose, develops further opportunities for working scientifically and explores science within real life contexts.

Girls into Global STEM (GIGS) I09
A hands on session where you can find out how an EU funded project involving the UK, Cyprus, Poland and Sweden is inspiring more girls to consider STEM careers. Each country is represented by a university or NGO working with a partner secondary school. In addition in the UK a major partner is Practical Action. So far each country has trialled one or more 'Global STEM Challenges'. These fit into curriculum areas across Europe not only in science but also in geography and citizenship. Each one is drawn from a Sustainable Development Goal:
Zero Hunger
Clean and affordable energy
Sustainable cities and communities
Climate Action
The 'challenge' is for older students (15-16) to develop activities for a younger cohort (12-14) using materials generated by Practical Action. These activities bring together science, global issues and mobile technologies and current thinking is that they will inspire pupils to think how science and technology can provide practical, often low-cost answers to important global issues. We have devised surveys for our school students both before and after the practical work and will look carefully at the results for both boys and girls in the coming weeks. Part of our session will feature students from De Ferrers Academy demonstrating one of their Global STEM Challenges.   You will find out more about all this work and about Years 2 and 3 of the project  at our session!

Aspects of Inquiry based learning (IBL)  can be traced back many years in some countries. However, despite considerable support for IBL approaches in some jurisdictions, uptake of IBL has been slow. In Europe, following the Ricard Report (2008), there has been a renewed emphasis on IBL and considerable funding for a range of projects aimed at promoting the use of IBL. The Maths and Science for Life (Mascil) Project is one of these projects. At the core of the project is a Professional Development (PD) 'Toolkit' aimed at supporting teachers in developing their use of IBL approaches in authentic contexts linked to the 'World of Work'.
This session will draw on research linked to the Mascil project concerning the attitudes, beliefs and practices of science teachers in examining some of the contestations in the field of IBL and the barriers to progress. It will also examine the different ways in which the Mascil model of PD has been utilised, reflecting its emphasis on participants taking ownership and the development of professional learning communities . Difficult ideas in Chemistry

Particles which do not change amidst change, burning which builds up oxides, the funny pH scale, reaction rates - how do we approach these difficult ideas?

  • We explore some of the barriers to understanding our chemical environment, starting with those particles which do not change even though things burn, grow, rot and evaporate around us.
  • Then we examine the process of burning which is a constructive process with energy stored in the fuel/oxygen system (no energy is stored in food or fuels!).
  • The gaseous oxides of combustion are acidic and the solid ashes are alkaline, but what is this strange pH scale?
  • And why do slow reactions get so much faster as the temperature rises – a 10 degree rise in temperature often doubles the rate? (Think of the time it takes milk to go sour – 8 days in the ‘fridge at 4 degrees, 4 days in a cool house at 14 degrees, 2 days in a warm house at 24 and a day at 34 degrees.)
My talk will be exemplified by reactions we see in everyday life, and I will suggest ideas for helping students understand the underlying chemistry.

About Keith Ross
I started teaching science in school on VSO in India after a metallurgy degree at Oxford. After a year in industry I made teaching my career, first in secondary schools in Birmingham and Leicestershire, then for 3 years in Nigeria. I was deeply inspired by Clive Sutton during a Master's in Education at Leicester University and was involved with some of the early challenges made to the science national curriculum by Ros Driver and colleagues.
In1980 I moved to teacher education at what became the University of Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. I began by working with students from Africa on A level chemistry teaching. Later I became the science tutor for the GITEP post graduate secondary teacher education project and the book “Teaching Secondary Science” now in its 4th edition was the outcome. Today’s talk is based on chapter 14 - 'Difficult ideas in Chemistry'.
In 2007-8 I worked with primary teachers in a college of education in Pakistan, and more recently, retired and living in the South West of France, I have been helping to develop chemistry videos for Fuseschool.

Make your Own Microfluidic Lab on a Chip! W27
The expanding field of microfluidic lab on a chip technology is brought to the classroom using affordable techniques for the production of lab on a chip devices. In the hands-on session participants will learn how to make such devices using standard office equipment. The procedures can be used in science education programmes in primary or secondary schools, and even in higher education courses.

If the Lab on a chip devices have standard dimensions, they also can be mounted in a quite simple chip holder, allowing fluidic connections to syringes and pumps. A complete microfluidic setup can be built at limitied cost. Small scale chemistry like formation of nanoparticles and precipitations for use in the classroom can be experienced during the workshop. Using advanced, nearly professional equipment, allows numerous experiments demonstrating the essentials of microfluidics.
