I'm a former chemistry teacher (20 yrs) and previously was the Chemistry Outreach Officer in the former School of Chemistry at Newcastle University (8yrs).

I am now a STEM Outreach Officer in the Science, Agriculture & Engineering (SAgE) Faculty at Newcastle. I deliver quality outreach activities to schoolchildren of all ages (yr0-yr13) and also the general public. You can find out about the range of workshops and other activities we offer to schools on our fully-searchable website: http://stem.ncl.ac.uk.

I am also an experienced A-level Chemistry marker for one of the major UK Boards (27 yrs) and an A-level Chemistry Practical Adviser for the same Board (since 2016). I am also an experienced CPD trainer/developer both freelance and for a range of organisations, eg the RSC, former Regional Science Learning Centres

I also develop peer-produced post-16 chemistry and biology learning and teaching resources with freely accessible worldwide research databases - the latest project with the LIPID MAPS database is the subject of my one of my workshops, co-hosted with Matthew Conroy from LIPID MAPS, at the ASE Conference in 2022. You can check out all the resources on my website: http://chemistrylearningresources.weebly.com.

I am also presenting repeat workshops on "Chemistry Smells" and "Spectroscopy in a Suitcase"!

Chemistry Smells is a hands-on workshop developed with my now retired colleague Anne Willis from Northumbria University and it is being delivered twice - both primary and secondary versions, although TBH there isn't much difference between the two, so feel free to attend whichever one fits your timetable best? I deliver it in schools as an outreach activity and also as a drop-in activity at eg Science Fairs or Museum Open Days, but it would be equally suitable for your students to develop their own version eg in Science or STEM Clubs?

Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) is the former RSC scheme which is sadly no longer funded by them, but they have generously donated the kit to the former providers who wished to keep it, including us! I have always offered SIAS to schools in all areas of the UK when visiting on an outreach tour and will continue to do so! These workshops (repeated twice) are an opportunity to see and use this portable spectroscopy kit - a Bruker Alpha FT-IR spectrometer and a Thermo PicoSpin 45MHz 1H NMR spectrometer! Both techniques are covered in all post-16 UK Chemistry specifications. I have a standard workshop for each technique but they can of course be tailored to the individual requirements of your school, where possible. I have also developed an online version of each workshop which I successfully delivered to many schools in the 2020-21 academic year. We will continue to offer the online version to schools anywhere on the planet! I also have a GCSE (or equivalent) workshop available using IR as an example of an instrumental analysis technique, developed on request for a local school, which is also popular.

I am attending all three days of the conference, but I'm not presenting at all on the Friday, so if you'd like to chat to me about something and can't attend any of my workshop sessions, please do get in touch via email or Twitter?

Happy to chat about:
- Chemistry
- Chemistry teaching, especially the effective use of practical work
- Chemistry assessment, particularly at A-level
- Outreach / Engagement for schools and/or other groups
